The contributions of Professor Ernst Begmatov, Doctor of Philological Sciences, to the collection and lexicographic compilation of Uzbek personal names are invaluable. His dictionary “The Meanings of Uzbek Personal Names” contains explanations for nearly 14,600 names. As the author rightly points out, “this dictionary does not encompass all Uzbek personal names and their variants.” While discussing a number of theoretical and practical issues in Uzbek anthroponymy, E. Begmatov places particular emphasis on the need to develop lexicographic principles and standards for compiling explanatory, orthographic, and transcription dictionaries of anthroponyms.
